AQUAMARINE: THE REAL MEANING

Named for the ocean’s purest shades of blue, the birthstone for March is reminiscent of calm waters and tropical lagoons.

Truth be told, the aquamarine took centre stage with a simple wave of Meghan Markle’s hand. It all happened when Prince Harry gave the newly christened Duchess of Sussex, a stunning Aquamarine ring which belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana.

Seeing as the Aquamarine is the March birthstone, we have decided to delve a bit deeper into the history of the stone and share why you just need one in your life.

HISTORY, ORIGIN AND MEANING

The name of the gem is derived from two Latin words ‘aqua’ for water and ‘marina’ from the sea. Aquamarines are a symbol of power, courage as well as inner peace. Fine quality aquamarines, ones with the ocean blue colour, excellent transparency and free of inclusions are very valuable.

The heyday for aquamarines in jewellery was the 1940s when there was an abundant supply of the gem. Since that period, many jewellers have set aquamarines in cocktail rings, dress rings and even engagement rings. You can browse Keshett’s Aquamarine collection here.

The Aquamarine stone is said to bring happiness to a new marriage and joy to any woman who wears it (similar to diamonds). Historically, aquamarines have been worn by kings and queens as far back as the Ancient Egyptians, who fashioned the stones into animal-shaped amulets that would protect their energy and personal strength.

AQUAMARINE – THE RING TREND OF 2019

And while the classic solitaire diamond ring will always be in favour, prepare to see the rise of what many would consider to be non-traditional rings—we’re talking coloured gorgeous stones, vintage settings and soft-toned settings.

HOW TO WEAR AQUAMARINES

The light, bright blue of aquamarine looks especially chic paired with neutrals, like black and white, navy blue and camel. Wear your aquamarine jewellery with a crisp white blouse and pencil skirt, with a little black dress and nude-hued heels, or to dress up dark jeans, tall boots and a neutral-hued cashmere sweater. But since the colour aquamarine is practically a neutral itself, it looks great with just about any outfit you own.

Aquamarines are durable enough to be worn as jewellery but that as with all jewellery, you should avoid any rough wear that might scratch them. They can withstand light exposure but don’t subject them to extreme heat. Clean aquamarines with gentle soap and warm water.
